The UK government has announced that casinos and betting shops in Merseyside will close from October 14 as part of further measures to halt the spread of the coronavirus.
Merseyside is an urban county in North West England, with a population of 1.38 million people.
On October 12, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new three-tier system of restrictions in England, which will apply to any region across the country, depending on the risk of transmission.

The new measures will be reviewed after each month and follow last week’s Scotland announcement, where casinos and pubs and restaurants in central Scotland will be closed from October 9 to at least October 25.
The news followed a rise in the number of cases in England, where nearly 14,000 confirmed positive tests were recorded on Monday, October 12.
The latest restrictions will be another big blow to casinos and retailers. The gambling shops have been open since June 15 after closing in mid-March, with casinos not reopening their doors until August 15, even offering to stop selling alcohol to avoid such closures.
British and Gaming Council Said about Casinos and Betting Shops in Liverpool Closed
British gambling industry group the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) was clear in its response to the measures. In a tweet, the BGC called Johnson’s announcement “hugely disappointing”
BGC CEO Michael Dugher believes that betting shops, classified as non-essential retail, are “unjustly chosen”. Dugher explained that betting shops adhere to strict COVID-19 guidelines and have also been approved by Public Health England, the executive agency of the government’s Department of Health and Social Care.
